One development in Taiz siege
Saudi-led airstrikes and Houthi attacks have intensified fighting in Yemen, worsening shortages and access in Taiz and putting civilians at risk of displacement and starvation.
Riyadh has come under heavy fire as Yemen's heaviest fighting in years has spilt over into Saudi Arabia. Four attacks have caused fatalities at King Khalid Airport, with the deadliest on Saturday killing 12 people and injuring 309 others, according to the coalition's toll. Maj Gen Al Malki condemned what he called cowardly terrorist acts by the Houthis against civilians.
At least 600,000 people in Taiz depend on aid, including more than 200,000 children. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said front-line hospitals in areas such as Marib, Taiz and Yemen's Red Sea coast are taking in unprecedented numbers of patients wounded by weapons, with some admitting more than 700 casualties in one week. More than 200,000 people have been displaced from their homes since fighting began in recent weeks, the UN's International Organisation for Migration said.

About 30 deminers from the Halo Trust remain among hundreds of thousands of civilians stuck in the besieged Yemeni city of Taiz, the organisation said on Wednesday. Houthi rebels have encircled the government-held city as the two sides fight for control.

Saudi Arabia did not immediately confirm the strike. Last Thursday, Houthi missiles were fired at the Presidential Palace in Aden, killing five people. On Monday, the government confirmed the deaths of at least 73 people when the Houthis struck a military training camp in Shabwa.

On Monday, the government confirmed the deaths of at least 73 people when the Houthis struck a military training camp in Shabwa. Saudi Arabia intervened in Yemen's civil war in support of the government in 2015, fearing the rise of Iranian influence and the prospect of chaos on its borders, after the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa.

But fighting reignited this year, amid the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran and rising tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia. More than 250,000 people have been displaced in Yemen since August, the United Nations said on Monday. Last month, the Houthis seized the country s Red Sea coast, then moved to encircle Taiz.
Fighting continues to escalate. On Monday, the Houthis struck a military camp in the middle of the country, killing dozens of soldiers. A day later, the provincial governor, Awad al-Wazir, said the death toll had risen to 73, which makes the strike among the deadliest attacks in the conflict so far.

A day later, the provincial governor, Awad al-Wazir, said the death toll had risen to 73, which makes the strike among the deadliest attacks in the conflict so far. The crisis in Taiz began to emerge in early October, after the Houthis took over the last road connecting the city to southern Yemen, said Shayef al-Jabri, a consultant with the Civic Center for Advocacy and Support, a local nonprofit.

The Yemeni military said the Houthis fired missiles towards the central city of Marib on Sunday, while government troops reported gains in Taiz, further south. Government-aligned commanders said eight soldiers died in fighting in Lahij province on Saturday. This latest phase of the war followed Houthi gains along Yemen s Red Sea coast last month.
Government forces launched a counteroffensive intended to recapture territory from the Houthis, who seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014. The fighting has uprooted more than 233,000 people, according to the International Organization for Migration, the UN s migration agency. About 121,000 are in Taiz province, where supply routes have been disrupted by the fighting.

The Houthis were keeping up their fight in Taiz governorate despite coming under Saudi airstrikes, the sources said.
This time, the siege does not only affect the governorate s main roads, but also most of the secondary roads connecting the rural districts themselves, Jamil said. Jamil said that approximately 2.8 million people had been living in government-held areas of Taiz governorate, alongside another 200,000 people who have been recently displaced by the fighting along the coast and rural Taiz. All of them will face humanitarian hardship and deteriorating living conditions as a result of the siege, he said.
